When Patton High School Athletic Director and assistant football coach Rob Gregory remembers how it all began, he smiles.
He was on the practice field working with a young kicker when a soccer goalkeeper wandered over and asked three words that changed everything: 鈥淐an I try?鈥
鈥淗e was a natural,鈥 Gregory said. 鈥淭hrough talking with him, he decided to try football and soccer, and he literally fell in love with kicking a football. He鈥檚 just grown as a kicker and as a person throughout the year.鈥

Patton goalkeeper Colsyn Queen moves the ball away from a South Caldwell player in a game on Aug. 12 at Patton High School.
From zero-star to standout
A year ago, Colsyn Queen had never played football. Now, the senior, who is Patton鈥檚 starting soccer goalkeeper, is drawing college interest as a football kicker.
Over the summer he competed against nationally ranked specialists.

Colsyn Queen, Patton鈥檚 two-sport standout, knocks through the PAT during Friday night鈥檚 Burke Jamboree at Freedom High School.
鈥淎t UNC Pembroke he went against three five-star kickers and beat them in the field goal contest,鈥 Queen鈥檚 father Jimmy Queen said. 鈥淭hat was a neat experience to see.鈥
Gregory has been amazed by the rise too.
鈥淗e鈥檚 gone to these kicking camps over the summer to kick against five-star recruits, and he鈥檚 a zero-star because nobody鈥檚 recruited him 鈥 and he鈥檚 destroying five-star recruits. I couldn鈥檛 be more proud of him,鈥 Gregory said.
An athlete鈥檚 mentality
Colsyn Queen sees the overlap between saving shots and making kicks.

Patton keeper Colsyn Queen sends the ball during Tuesday鈥檚 5-0 win over South Caldwell in Sawmills.
鈥淚t鈥檚 all in the mind,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou鈥檝e got to think every time. I have to kick the ball here and make a save or kick a field goal to win a game. It鈥檚 all in the mind.鈥
To prepare, he built a kicking station in his garage, his mother, Melody Queen, said. 鈥淗e kicks every day.鈥
鈥淗e鈥檚 doing it for the right reason,鈥 Jimmy Queen said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 not doing it because we want him to. He鈥檚 doing it because he wants to, and he鈥檚 doing it for the Lord.鈥
Family pride, and some nerves
The Queens trace Colsyn鈥檚 competitive fire back to age 4 in Ohio.
鈥淗e could have played with 10-year-olds when he started (soccer),鈥 Jimmy Queen said, 鈥淲e had to pull him off the field. He was scoring 13, 15 goals a game, and it just wasn鈥檛 fair.鈥
As proud as they are, both admit the move to football brought on some nerves.
鈥淚 never wanted him to play football, ever,鈥 Melody Queen said. 鈥淏ut as soon as he kicked it, it was the greatest moment ever.鈥
Jimmy Queen said that much like with his older sister, Tinley, who graduated at age 15, academics are just as important.
鈥淗e鈥檚 got a GPA in the high threes, low fours, and he鈥檚 taking multiple AP classes,鈥 Jimmy Queen said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why there are Ivy League schools looking at him.鈥
Leader on the field
On the pitch, Colsyn Queen directs his defense with authority as the Panthers鈥 captain.
鈥淗e鈥檚 really stepping up into that leadership role,鈥 soccer coach Keith Scott said. 鈥淥ur goal is always to win the conference and advance in the playoffs, and he鈥檚 a big part of that.鈥
In football, the expectations for Patton are more modest after the school did not field a varsity team last season. Wins may be hard to come by in a rebuilding year, but Queen鈥檚 consistency gives the Panthers a steady source of points.
鈥淓ven if we don鈥檛 have the best record, he鈥檚 the kind of player that makes every game better just by being out there,鈥 Gregory said.
Queen admits he is still haunted by a missed field goal last year against Lincoln Charter.
鈥淚鈥檝e done it a million times,鈥 he said. 鈥淪o, I just go out there, do what I know how to do, and get the job done.鈥
Looking ahead
College programs are noticing. Queen has visited Davidson, Western Carolina, William & Mary and Furman. He also has a visit lined up at The Citadel this fall, and Ivy League schools are starting to show interest.
鈥淔ootball was never something I thought about,鈥 Queen said. 鈥淏ut once I got the chance, I just wanted to keep learning and see where it could go.鈥
His parents say he is defined by that humble nature.
鈥淗e hates losing, and when he makes a mistake, he beats himself up more than anyone else could,鈥 Melody Queen said. 鈥淏ut he always uses it to get better. He stays humble, and that鈥檚 what鈥檚 going to serve him best.鈥
鈥淚 just hope life never changes him,鈥 Jimmy Queen said. 鈥淚 hope he stays exactly the way he is right now.鈥
