The Trump administration is tightening standards for evaluating 鈥済ood moral character鈥 in US citizenship applications. US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which oversees the nation鈥檚 legal immigration system, issued a memo outlining the changes. The directive instructs officers to weigh additional factors when determining an applicant鈥檚 moral character. In the memo, USCIS called for a more 鈥渞igorous, holistic, and comprehensive鈥 approach to evaluating those applying for naturalization. 鈥淯.S. citizenship is the gold standard of citizenship鈥攊t should only be offered to the world鈥檚 best of the best,鈥 USCIS chief spokesperson Matthew Tragesser said. Under the new policy, immigration officers will consider elements such as community involvement and educational attainment. They will also, however, give weight to negative information, including repeated DUI convictions or patterns of harassment.
