The first day of election filing saw folks in Valdese and Drexel step up to run for local council seats.

Municipal election filing in Burke County started at 8 a.m. on Monday and ends at noon on Friday, July 18.

In Valdese, those who filed Monday were:

Mayor: Keith Huffman

Ward 1: Shannon Radabaugh

Ward 2: Melinda Zimmerman (appointed to fill unexpired term)

Ward 3: Rexanna Lowman (incumbent)

The filing fees are $12 for mayor and $10 for council.

In Drexel, those who filed were:

Mayor: Dennis Anthony (incumbent)

Alderman (unexpired): Jennifer Yount

The mayor, an unexpired council seat and two other council seats are up for election in Drexel.

The filing fees are $10 for mayor and $5 for aldermen.

In Glen Alpine, the mayor and three council seats are up for grabs. The filing fee is $5.

In ÈÕ±¾ÎÞÂë, the District 3 and District 4 seats are up for election. The filing fee is $25.

In Connelly Springs, the mayoral and three alderman seats are up for election. The filing fee is $5.

In Rhodhiss, the mayoral and two council seats are up for grabs. The filing fee is $5.

Only voters who live in the town limits of these municipalities can file and vote.

The towns of Hildebran and Rutherford College hold their elections in even years.
